Mexican War veteran Nehemiah Brooks is the proprietor of a flourishing Pennsylvania iron mill and an abolitionist who abhors slavery. A visiting attorney, Walter Beecher, informs Brooks that, as the only surviving kin of his recently departed uncle, he has inherited a North Carolina cotton plantation and now finds himself the owner of slaves.
Wanting only to sell off the property, Brooks travels south to oversee the auction facilitated by Beecher. There he meets Cal Carter, the sadistic owner of a neighboring plantation, whose cruelty toward his own Negro servants Brooks witnesses first-hand. As he and Beecher prepare for the estate auction, Brooks sees for himself the dire condition of the enslaved people there and is horrified to learn that Carter is the only one bidding on the plantation.
Brooks must choose whether to leave 85 pitiable souls in the grip of a merciless brute, or forsake the life he’s built up north to stay and run the plantation himself. Deciding upon the latter, he alienates one of the only two people he knows in North Carolina and makes a sworn enemy of the other.
